I don't know if distilled water is necessary but i did a google search about browning with moss and several explanations made mention that there are minerals and chlorine that are not good for moss. When they turn brown it is just best leave it alone if you are trying to handle it or it could be stressed because its enviorment doesn't meet its personal needs.
